Out of the six lead Friends characters, four of them ended up paired with each other in the end (Chandler and Monica, Ross and Rachel) and everyone kissed each other. Still, while everyone saw the dating chemistry between Matt LeBlanc's Joey Tribbiani and Lisa Kudrow's Phoebe Buffay, nothing ever happened between them -- and here's why.
LeBlanc and Kudrow recently sat down with People Magazine to speak of their respective shows, Episodes and The Comeback, where they both play former sitcom stars trying to get back on top in fictionalized versions of themselves. During the interview, they were asked what we've all been wondering for over 20 years: why weren't Joey and Phoebe a thing?
"Towards the end we actually pitched the idea that Joey and Phoebe had been having casual sex the entire time," said LeBlanc, in what sounds like a hilarious backstory of a very How I Met Your Mother nature. "We'd go back and shoot all the historical scenes and just before a moment that everyone recognizes, there's Joey and Phoebe coming out of a broom closet together. But they were like, 'Nah.'"
Of course, that never happened, and in fact Phoebe ended up meeting a great guy, Mike (Paul Rudd) and marrying him near the end of the series, while Joey moved to Los Angeles and made that awful spinoff show, Joey.
The revelation of this rejected story arc came days after it was revealed that the Friends cast would reunite for an NBC special next month, dedicated to television director James Burrows, who was behind the camera for many of the show's episodes. Unfortunately, according to BBC, the special won't include the entire cast: Matthew Perry, who's about to premiere a new play in London, won't be joining the rest of the gang for the reunion.
Could we BE any more disappointed?
