The late night rumor mill continues to spin. After years of having Jay Leno as the steady ratings winning host of "The Tonight Show," the last few years have been a whirlwind for NBC and its executives. There was of course the whole Conan O'Brien, Jay Leno, "Tonight Show" drama back in 2009-2010. NBC thought that was all over once Conan left for TBS and Leno was back in his "Tonight Show" hosting gig, but now rumors are starting up again. This latest rumor involves SNL funnyman Seth Meyers taking over for Jimmy Fallon on "Late Night."

The rumors started up again a few weeks ago when speculation began that NBC would be replacing Leno as the "Tonight Show" host in 2014 when Leno's contract expires. Now, The New York Times' Bill Carter is reporting that, although not official, the plan is to put Jimmy Fallon in the "Tonight Show" slot no later than the Fall of 2014. Better yet, the report says "The Tonight Show" will be returning to New York. Wow, NBC wasn't even going to do that for Conan O'Brien. They must have a lot of confidence in Fallon.

"The Tonight Show" would then move from Burbank California, where it has been since 1972 when Johnny Carson moved out west, to 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City where Fallon currently tapes "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." If this happens, that would leave Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O'Brien as the only high profile late night hosts left in California.

So who would replace Fallon on "Late Night?" There was the rumor a few weeks ago that Howard Stern would take over the 12:30am slot, which Stern wouldn't comment on, except to say it was insulting. Now rumor has it that Saturday Night Live head Lorne Michaels wants Seth Meyers to take over Fallon's seat. Unlike a lot of names that will come up in rumors, Meyers makes a lot of sense. He has the SNL ties with Michaels, who also chose Fallon from his SNL tenure. Meyers also has on-air experience hosting "Weekend Update" on SNL, along with the appeal to a younger audience NBC is craving. For now; however, these are all just rumors. So do you want one more rumor?

The ridiculousness of this entire process is that NBC may end up making the same mistake they made with Leno and Conan a few years ago. Despite having his public image take a hit, Leno still is number one in the ratings. Leno also seems to continue going strong despite the network's desire to get younger. NBC caved without giving Conan O'Brien a chance, so will they learn their lesson with Fallon? Leno may make the situation difficult on them if the rumor of FOX being interested in Leno is true. The New York Post is reporting that FOX may be interested in inserting Leno in their network at 11pm if NBC ditches him, and why not, he is a proven ratings success.

Fallon taking over "The Tonight Show" in New York, Seth Meyers taking over for Fallon on "Late Night," and Jay Leno moving to FOX. Whew, the late night rumor mill is spinning awfully fast.
