The Associated Press reports that two mixed martial arts promoters from Michigan were recently shocked to learn that one of their fighters who supposedly died in a tragic car crash last month is still very much alive. Charles Rowan, along with his girlfriend Rosalinda Martinez, were arrested and charged on Friday (March 22) for holding up a gun shop in Gladwin County. That's right - Rowan faked his own death, for reasons which still remain unclear.
Approximately two weeks ago, MMA promoters Christo Piliafas and Scott DiPonio organized a benfit event in Traverse City for Rowan's "mourning" family, where they helped to raise over $1,000.
Turns out that Rowan is actually still alive... if not exactly well.
The 25-year-old fighter, his girlfriend Rosalinda Martinez, and the couple's friend Michael Bowman were arrested on Friday after holding up a gun shop 100 miles away in Gladwin County. All three were ultimately charged with armed robbery and assault with intent to murder... each criminal has requested a court-appointed attorney. The attempted robbery left the shop owner with severe injuries.
Piliafas, who is a pro fighter as well as promoter, told the AP that he's very angry about being duped by the deceitful amateur heavyweight.
