The 2013 NCAA Tournament continues as the 8th seeded North Carolina Tar Heels are set to take on the 9th seeded Villanova Wildcats at 7:20 PM EST. Catch the action via TNT.
The Tar Heels had a tough season but managed to place third in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tar Heels made It all the way to the ACC Championship game before being defeated by an upstart Miami Hurricanes program. Villanova tied for seventh in the brutal Big East but took down several schools that are currently national title favorites like Georgetown, Louisville, and Syracuse.
If you are going to watch any of the second round games, make it this one. These teams are fairly evenly matched and that should make for an exciting game.
Key To The Matchup for North Carolina: Extend Your Defense
Villanova is deadly from downtown. When they hit 6 or more 3-pointers they are 14-1. If they fail to reach that threshold they are 6-12. So, it's safe to say that if you take the long ball from the Wildcats, your chances of winning increase greatly.
Keys to the Matchup for Villanova: Guard the Perimeter (aka Same as NC)
While the win-loss difference isn't as great as Villanova's, the Tar Heels definitely suffer when you don't give them a 3-point option. Pay close attention to Hairston in particular, as he's been streaking lately and teammates will always feed a hot hand.
Fun Fact:
The victor of UNC-Villanova tournament showdowns typically does very well throughout the rest of the tournament. Every single time these teams have met each other in the NCAA tournament (1982,1985, 1991, 2005, 2009), the winner has gone on to reach the Final Four (at least). Several championship runs and a few titles are scattered throughout the showdown's history.
