It seems like everyone has been so interested on which side will win in Captain America: Civil War that fans have momentarily forgotten that the film will feature the rise of the supervillain known as Crossbones. Brock Rumlow was played by Frank Grillo in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and he is returning to possibly end Chris Evans' Steve Rogers for good!
[POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD]
Grillo recently spoke with ComicBook.com, where he confirmed that Marvel had big plans for his character right from the start.
"When we sat down with Marvel, they knew it was an origin story [for Crossbones]. They weren't quite sure where they wanted to take Crossbones but they knew they wanted Crossbones in some of these films but they definitely knew that that's where they were going with the character," Grillo confirmed.
The actor also admitted that he reached out to Captain America comic book writer Ed Brubaker to prepare for his role in The Winter Soldier.
"Before I got the job, I started doing some research and I was like, 'Oh, this guy's a bad-ass!' I don't know if I'm gonna live but I want to be that guy," he admits. "I spoke to Brubaker, who created Crossbones*. He's a great dude and I got some of the back issues and stuff and read the origins of Crossbones and where he came from."
He may not seem so important in the film yet, but in the comic books, Rumlow plays a very important role. Crossbones happens to be the one who assassinates Steve Rogers, forcing Bucky Barnes to take over the Captain America mantle. Grillo knows about this, but he isn't sharing any details about Captain America's possible death in the movie.
"The thing with Marvel is they don't always follow to the T what the character did in the comic books. They use him in different ways. You never know what's gonna happen," he said. "I know Crossbones in the comics kind of offs Cap at some point and we're probably not gonna see that happen. I'm not gonna kill him yet."
Find out if Crossbones can take on Steve Rogers when Captain America: Civil War drops into theaters on May 6.
* - Crossbones was actually created by Mark Greunwald and Kieron Dwyer. Brubaker wrote The Death of Captain America, where Crossbones kills Steve Rogers.
