Actress and former radio personality Alani "Lala" Anthony announced that she's producing Oscar Award winner Lupita N'Yongo's first Broadway debut in Eclipsed at the John Goldman Theater opening on March 26 through June 19.
Anthony told Deadline, "Eclipsed is a stunning new play that demands to be seen, and to make my Broadway debut as a producer with it is an honor. I'm especially excited to join the production's efforts to bring thousands of young women to see the show through its 10,000 Girls campaign. What an extraordinary opportunity to pave the way for the next generation of commanding young women."
The play, set in the Liberian civil war torn African region is about a group of women held against their will written by Danai Gurira, has had a run at the Public Theater to sold out crowds, will be co-produced alongside media maven Marvet Britto, Alia Jones-Harvey and others.
Lupita is no stranger to the off-broadway version of the play will rejoin her original castmates. According to Playbill, Pascale Armand, Akosua Busia, Zainab Jah and Saycon Sengbloh and Leisl Tommy from "12 Years a Slave" will be N'Yongo's co-stars.
The initial off-broadway production was described as, "Amid the chaos of the Liberian Civil War, the captive wives of a rebel officer band together to form a fragile community - until the balance of their lives is upset by the arrival of a new girl. Drawing on reserves of wit and compassion, Eclipsed reveals distinct women who must discover their own means of survival in this deeply felt portrait of women finding and testing their own strength in a hostile world of horrors not of their own making."
What is unique about the play's contribution to Broadway is that "Eclipsed marks a historic moment on Broadway: the first time the cast, director, and playwright are composed entirely of female artists, fitting for a production that so stunningly chronicles the experiences of a group of very resilient women," revealed producers.
Best wishes to Lala Anthony, Lupita and the team of cast and production crew!
