Sam Smith Racist: Is 'Writing's on the Wall' Singer Too Naive About Social Issues?

Barely a week after receiving an Oscar nomination for "Writing's on the Wall," his song for the James Bond movie Spectre, Grammy winner Sam Smith went on Twitter to speak about his friend who is a victim of racism. However, the British singer's tweets have made him face backlash over being too naive about the situations racial minorities go through.

According to The Independent, the 23-year-old star has been called out for being "ignorant" and "living in a bubble" this week, after he took to social media to express his amazement that one of his friends had been "racially abused" in his native London.

When the singer pointed out that he never thought he'd witness that kind of behavior in his hometown, many took to Twitter to ask him what kind of shielded world had he been living in. Some even accused him of "whitesplaining," or telling black people what their issues are as if they didn't know them.

While some fans thanked the singer for speaking out against these issues, Smith's original tweets received a lot of backlash, the Grammy winner took to Instagram to share a statement on the entire situation.

"I don't profess to know or remotely understand what it means to be on the receiving end of racist abuse, but having been bullied my whole life for being gay, what I do know is that it is wrong and completely unacceptable," wrote Smith on the social network, The Mirror reports.

Only a few days back, Smith's compatriot, Idris Elba, spoke on Parliament about the lack of opportunities black actors and other minorities face when looking to be cast in roles in the country. The Luther actor revealed that the reason he left for America was that he wasn't finding any other opportunities, as black actors were usually only cast as thugs
