Darius Fleming played 26 snaps, accounting for two tackles in the New England Patriots AFC Divisional Round win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. But it's what he did off the field in the week leading up to the game that made an even bigger impact. Fleming rescued a woman from a car crash.
The linebacker was a witness to a car crash two days before Sunday's playoff game after leaving practice at Gillette Stadium. He stopped to assess the situation before realizing a woman involved in the crash was stuck in her car. At first he attempted to knock the window out with his elbow, but the glass held firm. That's when he decided to kick out the window, which worked, as he was ultimately able to help the woman exit the vehicle safely.
"I tried to break [the window] with my elbow, but that didn't work, so I just started kicking the window," Fleming told the Boston Globe. "Eventually it broke, puller her out, made sure she was OK, and I looked at my leg and I noticed it was bleeding pretty bad."
He wasn't lying. He received 22 stitches.
"Obviously he had no regards for himself. Just wanted to get the girl out," an eyewitness said. "Came in, saved the day and left. A true hero."
As for the woman in the car--a 25-year-old resident of the area who asked to remain anonymous--she was unharmed; thanks, in part, to Fleming.
"I obviously thanked him," she said. "I was appreciative that he did this. I had no idea that he suffered an injury. That's terrible that he did."
It's no wonder she felt bad. According to the Boston Globe, she's a Patriots fan. She'll no doubt be rooting extra hard this Sunday when the Patriots square off against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos for a shot at the Super Bowl.
