Daniel Radcliffe has a new movie on this year's Sundance Film Festival, Swiss Army Man with Paul Dano, and many of his fans walked out the first time it was played. Why? Because the actor's most recent attempt at shedding his Harry Potter image is basically a very long fart joke and not everyone's having it, with news outlets giving the concept mixed reviews.
According to Variety, Radcliffe's new film was one of the most anticipated works in this year's edition of the iconic indie festival, with the Eccles Theater in Utah's Salt Lake City having to turn away hundreds of fans from entering Swiss Army Man's packed premiere last Friday. Still, none of that stopped the many walk-outs, with many getting away from the film as quickly as possible in downright disgust.
In the film, Dano plays a man stuck in a deserted island who's about to commit suicide when a corpse (Radcliffe), washes on to the shore. This corpse happens to fart a lot, so much so that it can be used as a motor raft to get out to better places, which is exactly what happens.
Oh, and the corpse also gets erections.
The film, directed by duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (who have directed multiple music videos like Tenacious D's "Rize of the Phoenix"), has been described as a "magical realist" tale, and it's quickly become the most divisive movie in the festival. Its inspiration? A fart joke Radcliffe made.
Vulture caught up with the Horns actor to discuss his latest film, and Radcliffe said he was pretty clear on the fact that it's not made for everyone, but that "the people who love it will hold it very dear to them for a long time."
"I see this film as being a triumph of creativity over practicality," said Radcliffe proudly. "We shouldn't have been able to do it, but we did."
There are still no release dates for the film beyond the Sundance premiere, but considering the buzz it's getting, a distributor will most likely pick it up any day now.
