Several reports confirm that the FBI is currently investigating the sudden death of a 62-year-old woman aboard a Royal Caribbean Enchantment of the Seas cruise ship that departed from Baltimore, MD over the weekend. According to authorities, there are definitely "suspicious undertones" surrounding the case. The luxury ship ported on Monday (March 25), after vacationers experienced a seven-day trip with pit-stops in Port Canaveral, FL and the Bahamas.
FBI agents said they are unsure when the mysterious death actually took place, but a spokesperson recently told The Baltimore Sun that it was reported late on Sunday (March 24).
Royal Caribbean representatives told WBAL-TV that the unidentified woman was found dead inside the stateroom that she was sharing with her husband. The cause of her death has not yet been determined or made public.
According to the company's official blog, the woman's husband reported her death while aboard the ship late Sunday.
A statement released by Royal Caribbean reads, "We extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends." The company claims it contacted the FBI and local police as part of standard procedures once the crew was made aware of the incident.
FBI Baltimore field office spokesman Rich Wolf states that agents met and boarded the ship after it docked in Baltimore on Monday as scheduled. He says an autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause and manner of death - agents are also interviewing the woman's husband. Wolf declined to say whether the woman suffered any trauma, although officials claim there were "suspicious undertones" surrounding the Virginia native's death. Therefore, an investigation was promptly issued.
"We look at any kind of suspicious death on the high seas," said Wolf, who would not elaborate any further.
Thoughts and condolences go out to the victim's family and friends during this time of tragedy.
