If it seems like years ago that the reality show "Survivor" first aired on CBS, it was. "Survivor" was one of the first over-the-top reality shows that aired on U.S. television back in 2000. Since then TV has been consumed with reality shows, but "Survivor" has remained a ratings hit for CBS.  The competition puts strangers on a desolate island where they must survive by getting their own food, water, etc. They compete in immunity challenges and competitions with their "tribes" voting off a new member each week. The show has lasted over a decade, but news has broke that the French "Survivor" will not be airing anymore after the death of a contestant.

25-year-old Gerald Babin died of cardiac arrest while filming the French version of "Survivor" in Cambodia. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Babin died Friday after the first day of filming of the 2013 season of "Koh-Lanta." According to the report, channel TF1 and production company Adventure Line Productions made the decision to cancel the season after hearing the news.

Babin reportedly was complaining of cramps in his arm so he received medical location at the location by a staff medical doctor. Babin was then flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital. Chanel TF1 said in a statement, "Adventure Line Productions, TF1 and [host] Denis Broginart are devastated and join in the profound sadness of Gerald's family." According to Adventure Line Productions  all participants receive extensive medical examinations and testing.

"Koh-Lanta" was a ratings hit for TF1, just like its American counterpart, averaging 7.4 million viewers in 2012. Details have not been made regarding the future of the show beyond this season. As of right now it seems like just the 2013 season has been cancelled.

It's unlikely this would have any effect on the American version of "Survivor," but in this day and age of lawsuits and constant legal action, you never know. Producers could possibly try to put more testing in place, but my guess is that there already is plenty of precautions and legal language put into going on "Survivor."

Do you think "Survivor" can do anything more to protect contestants? If so, what? Comment below.
