The first DWTS 2013 results show for season 16 that premiered Monday night (3/26) revealed a shocking first elimination (or should we call it "drop out"). Olympic figure skater Dorothy Hamill and her all-star partner Tristan were the first pair to leave this season's competition of ABC's Dancing with the Stars. Although the pair did not place in the bottom two during Monday night's performance episode, Hamill was forced to withdraw from the competition due to unfortunate injuries.
The Olympic gold medalist figure skater and cancer survivor could barely rehearse the jive with partner Tristan MacManus this week due to pain from a cyst on her back in addition to a sore ankle.
"It would be completely unfair for me to stay and do any of this," she said at the end of tonight's results show, noting the prognosis of possible irreparable nerve damage and an order to rest from her spinal surgeon.
"I can't do what I need to... I wish I could give it my all and I can't," the former skater cried. Hamill was teary-eyed when she said she'd miss the cast and crew. "This man is just a treasure," Dorothy said as she hugged partner Tristan.
Although Hamill only earned a score of 15 for the weak jive performance this week, her and Tristan's first solid dance last week saved them from landing in the bottom two during the results show.
In other revelations from Tuesday's DWTS, the bottom couples announced were boxer Victor Ortiz and Lindsay Arnold, along with "Real Housewife" Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb Savchenko. Both of these pairs earned a combined total of 36 for their performances thus far in the season, and one couple would have been eliminated if Dorothy hadn't dropped out.
Prior to Hamill bowing out of the competition and giving two of her fellow contestants another chance to dance, the rest of the results show played out as follows:
Ingo Rademacher (soap actor) and Kym Johnson, Sean Lowe ("Bachelor" reality star) and Peta Murgatroyd, and Wynonna Judd (country singer) and Tony Dovolani were the first three couples deemed safe, while Victor Ortiz (boxer) & Lindsay were the first pair in jeopardy.
The couple who earned the most fan tweets was Zendaya Coleman (Disney star) and Val Chmerkovskiy, allowing them to dance an encore. Soon after, it was announced that Zendaya & Val secured a spot in next week's competition.
Aly Raisman (Olympic gymnast) and Mark Ballas were later named safe as well, while viewers' votes wound up saving comedian D.L. Hughley and Cheryl Burke (the pair that earned the lowest score from the judges in week one and the second lowest in week two).
The next couple to join Victor in the bottom was Lisa Vanderpump (RHOBH reality star) and Gleb Savchenko, as they earned an unimpressive score of 18 for each of their performances.
Kellie Pickler (former American Idol contestant) and Derek Hough, and Jacoby Jones (NFL player) and Karina Smirnoff joined the stars on the "safe" side next.
The remaining pairs, Dorothy Hamill and Tristan MacManus and Andy Dick (actor) and Sharna Burgess, were left to determine the Bottom 3. It was Dorothy & Tristan who were named safe, though she later announced her decision to leave the competition anyway.
The bottom two stars (Lisa Vanderpump & Victor Ortiz) may have been given a free pass this week, thanks to Hamill's unfortunate injury, but hopefully they will take this as a severe wake-up-call that they need to step their game up next week.
The combined scores thus far this season are:
Disney star Zendaya Coleman, 16 years old, and Val Chmerkovskiy earn the most judges' points with 26 points this week and 24 last week for a total of 50 out of 60 points. Former "American Idol" star Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough have a two-week total of 47. Olympian Aly Raisman and Mark Ballas have 45 points. NFL standout Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff have 43 points. Actor Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson get 40. "The Bachelor" Sean Lowe and Peta Murgatroyd have 39. Actor Andy Dick and Sharna Burgess have 37. With 36 points are: Real Housewife Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb Savchenko, country star Wynonna Judd and Tony Dovolani, boxer Victor Ortiz and Lindsay Arnold, and Dorothy Hamill and Tristan MacManus.
One star has already fallen in Season 16's Dancing with the Stars...who will be next?
