As the Supreme Court begins to hear arguments on the constitutionality of 1996's Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), Beyonce posted a handwritten note to Instagram in support of gay marriage. The eternally slick Queen Bey managed to let her thoughts be known on marriage equality while referencing her smash hit 'Single Ladies'.
The handwritten note on red stationary reads "If you like it you should be able to put a ring on it #wewillunite4marriageequality!"
Idolator writer Sam Lanksy joked that conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scolia responded to the pic saying "Lol, nvm, wrong about everything #dumb. Tx Bey. #wise #grown"
DOMA is a highly controversial act which contains sections delineating that same-sex married couples are not entitled to the same marital benefits as heterosexual married couples.
The case being reviewed is United States v. Windsor. Edith Windsor,83, married her partner Thea Spyer in Canada in 2007. Spyer passed away in 2009 and left her estate to Windsor. Because of stipulations under DOMA, Windsor was forced to pay a federal estate tax bill of $360,000, which she would not have to pay if she were married to a man. Windsor is simply suing for a refund of the money but the court's decision could have much farther reaching implications in the marriage equality battle.
This marks the second cause in as many days that Beyonce has thrown her considerable influence behind. It was recently announced that she would headline the Chime for Change event, "The Sound of Change Live." The Gucci sponsored event takes place in London's Twickenham Stadium on June 1. Chime for Change is a global initiative supporting "education, health and justice for women everywhere."
Beyonce will share the stage with acts like John Legend, Florence + the Machine, Iggy Azalea, Rita Ora, Timbaland, Ellie Goulding and HAIM.
"Our goal is to call for change for girls and women in the loudest voice possible," said Beyoncé in a news release. "I am excited for us to come together on June 1st to bring the issues of Education, Health and Justice for girls and women to the world stage."
