After Italy's Supreme Court ordered a new trial for the murder case of British student Meredith Kercher at the hands of her American roommate Amanda Knox and then-boyfriend Rafaelle Sollecito, thoughts of extradition came to mind. If Knox is convicted of murder, will she have to be extradited back to the Italian prison she was in for 4 years? Knox and Sollecito were already convicted of the 2007 murder in a 2009 trial but then had the rulings overturned in 2011 allowing them to go free. Knox has been living in America, attending the University of Washington.
According to some reports, the United States will most likely not allow the extradition to happen. Odds are, Knox will never return to Italy. So while she is seemingly safe in Seattle, her ex-boyfriend Sollecito is not as lucky. Each suspect is free to skip the retrial, but considering Sollecito is an Italian citizen, if found guilty he will be arrested.
After hearing the news that the murder case had been reopened, calling for a new case, Amanda Knox released the following statement:
"It was painful to receive the news that the Italian Supreme Court decided to send my case back for revision when the prosecution's theory of my involvement in Meredith's murder has been repeatedly revealed to be completely unfounded and unfair."
She added that the case must now be handed over to a "capable prosecution" and "re-explored by an objective investigation. No matter what happens, my family and I will face this continuing legal battle as we always have, confident in the truth and with our heads held high in the face of wrongful accusations and unreasonable adversity."
Rafaelle Sollecito and Knox have just signed respective book deals and Amanda is set to appear in a Diane Sawyer interview in April.
