Production for Netflix's adaptation of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is well underway, and weeks after announcing Neil Patrick Harris in the role of evil Count Olaf, there are fresh casting news. Supergirl actress Malina Weissman and newcomer Louis Hynes will play the eldest Baudelaire orphans, Violet and Klaus in the new version of Daniel Handler's story.
According to Deadline, out of the two new actors, Weissman is the one who's done the most work on camera. Besides playing younger Kara in Supergirl, she also appeared in the 2014 live-action version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a younger Megan Fox. She's also worked with executive producer/director Barry Sonnenfeld in Nine Lives, which is currently filming.
Hynes, who will play middle Baudelaire brother Klaus, has no other credits to his name.
As Entertainment Weekly reports, the Lemony Snicket show will follow the many adventures of the three Baudelaire orphans (there's also a baby, Sunny, that hasn't been cast yet), who attempt to discover the mysterious way their parents died in a fire. In the meantime, evil Count Olaf tries to get ahold of their fortune, pursuing them all over the world in really bad, and obvious, costumes.
It seems like everything about the upcoming series is more or less tentative, and it's only been a few weeks since casting choices began to be announced. Still, true to the book series' mysterious nature, information about the series adaptation has been scarce, other than the fact that novelist Handler and Men in Black director Sonnenfeld are heavily involved as executive produers.
In the first adaptation of the young adult book series, released in 2004, the roles of Violet and Klaus were played by Emily Browning and Liam Aiken, while the role of Count Olaf went to Jim Carrey. The rest of the cast was pretty impressive, including Jude Law, Timothy Spall, Billy Connolly and Meryl Streep.
