Last night's "American Idol" was a salute to the Motor City. The Motown music night was another chance for the remaining eight "Idol" contestants to show fans they have what it takes to be the season 12 "American Idol." Meanwhile the judges continue to draw attention tho themselves. Namely Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, who showed up Wednesday night wearing dresses that are very similar. Can we just have a sing off between the two divas on the season finale? The top eight singers got a chance to pick music from Detroit's long history of performers. Everything from Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, and The Temptations to Eminem and Kid Rock. Oh, and the legendary Smokey Robinson is this week's mentor.
Arguably this season's top singer, Candice Glover, started off the show with Marvin Gaye's "Heard it Through the Grapevine." Once again Glover knocked it out of the park and received high praise from all four judges. Up next was Lazaro Arbos who sang "For Once in My Life" by Stevie Wonder. Arbos was better than usual, but he is still not one of the better singers in the remaining top eight. Randy Jackson said it best when he said, "I don't know if you completely redeemed yourself but it was far better than last week."
Janelle Arthur chooses a Supremes song and puts her own country spin on "Keep Me Hangin' On." Arthur's performance is one of her best yet, with Mariah saying it was, "Janelle at her finest." Devin Velez goes with the bold move of singing mentor Smokey Robinson's "The Track of My Tears." The original song was performed by The Miracles, but written Robinson. Velez's performance got mixed reviews from the judges with Keith Urban not loving the song, but the rest of the panel giving him kudos.
Burnell Taylor sings Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour." Taylor puts on arguably the best performance of the night from the men, prompting Nicki Minaj to give him a "very, very good" review. Angie Miller goes up next to give The Miracles' "Shop Around" a try. Surprisingly the "American Idol" front runner had a tough time with this song. She also got some negative reviews from the judges with Mariah Carey questioning her song choice. Mariah told her that she could have just sung "I'll Be There" on the piano and done a much better job.
Amber Holcomb sings Stevie Wonder's "Lately" and once again does a great job. She has one of the best natural singing voices on this season. Mariah called her the "tour de force." Kree Harrison performed the last solo performance of the night with Aretha Franklin's "Don't Play That Song." Kree does a nice job with the song and gets positive reviews from all four judges.
That is it for Wednesday night's "American Idol." I still think the guys just don't hold up with the ladies on this season and we may be seeing Devin Velez or Lazaro Arbos going home. "Idol" favorite Angie Miller had a tough performance this week, which could put her in jeopardy, but she is still much better than Velez or Arbos. Who do you think is going home Thursday night?
Make sure you check back with Mstarz tomorrow as we recap Thursday night's voting results show.
