What were you doing at 13? Making mud pies? Learning to differentiate between there, their and they're? A child genius studying Astrophysics at Cornell? In any case, whatever it was, it probably wasn't winning gold at the X-Games, which is exactly what Kelly Sildaru was able to do.
On Friday, the 13-year-old skiing sensation from Estonia took Gold in the Women's skiing slopestyle contest. Not only did she become the youngest competitor to do so in the history of Winter X, but it also served as the first-ever X games medal for Estonia. To put the latter part of that into perspective--winning X-Games gold at 13 can't be put into perspective, it's not humanly possible! Estonia doesn't even have mountains. She rides a 100-meter hill near her home. Other than that, it's a trek across Europe to find some proper mountains to shred.
"It is hard there because we don't have mountains," Sildaru told the Denver Post.
Despite her age, the win isn't totally surprising--if you can believe it. Sildaru has been pegged as the future of women's freeskiing since 2011, when she was 10.
The diminutive skiier--at 5-foot-1 and 88-pounds, the smallest competitor in this year's X Games--was able to best the rest of the field with her trademark 900's, spinning in both directions. She also displayed both variety and difficulty, earning a score of 93 on her very first run down the hill, which would prove to be more than enough.
It's been a good two months for Sildaru, as she took home first place at the Dew Tour in Breckenridge back in December, further cementing her status as one of the best in the business while just exploring her first year as a teenager. It appears as though we'll be seeing plenty more of Sildaru in the years to come.
