FX's Sterling Archer is coming back for a season 7 of terrible spying, but it's taking its cues from some of the best in the business. In the latest trailer for Archer, the secret agent stars in a shot-by-shot parody of the classic 80s show, Magnum P.I., starring Tom Selleck, 'stache and all, and it's just as perfect as it sounds.
According to io9, the new trailer for Archer isn't just a fun new way to see the animated spy: it's a promise. For the next season of the show, the cast will be moving to Los Angeles for a new endeavor: a detective agency.
In season 7, Archer has run out of money, so he decides to move to the West Coast and follow the steps of Thomas Magnum, only in L.A. instead of Hawaii. This makes sense because Archer has always been quite a fan of the show, and the new intro is just another of many references to the character that turned Selleck into a superstar -- most notably, there was that homage on the second season's episode, "Placebo Effect."
"We tried our best to be as accurate to the Magnum P.I. opening as possible," Matt Thompson, executive producer for Archer, told Uproxx. "But at the same time, we tried to bury some Archer Easter eggs inside of it. The goal for Magnum was to be as accurate as we could while still doing a little bit of a joke, while making sure that our characters are still coming through."
Will Selleck make a guest appearance in this Magnum-themed season? The producer wouldn't say, but just the same, there will be some impressive new voices for Archer's L.A. days, including Patton Oswalt, J.K. Simmons, Jon Daly, Keegan Michael Key and Jon Glaser.
Archer will come back to FX on March 31.
