Ever since the first trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane dropped a few weeks back (in true, sneaky J.J. Abrams fashion), fans have been wondering if the eponymous Cloverfield monster would even make an appearance in the film. Not only does the new footage revealed in the Super Bowl teaser clear that up, it also clears up a few more things. Let's take a look at the top 3 things revealed in the new teaser trailer.
1. There is Most Definitely a Monster Involved
The very end of the clip shows Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character, Michelle, outside facing a house. A strange glow is coming from behind the house, and Michelle looks on in shock. At the very end, a familiar roar can be heard in the distance. Since Abrams, who is producing the film, has previously said that the film is "a blood relative" of Cloverfield, many figured the monster from that film may not be shown, or heard, at all in this film. The new spot seems to disprove that, although it is entirely possible (and even highly likely) that this one glimpse is the only one given of the monster in 10 Cloverfield Lane.
2. A Car Crash Sets the Events of the Film in Motion
Winstead had previously told Variety back in 2014 that the events of the film take place after her character is in a "severe car accident and [she] fears she has been abducted." The first trailer for the film didn't show the car wreck, but this one did, confirming Winstead's statements. Naturally, this reveal forces more questions to be asked. In the clip, it looks as if her car lands in a ditch of some kind. And if John Goodman (her presumed captor in the film) spends all of his time in the bunker, how did he find her? And why did he take her? All questions we hope will be answered in the film.
3. The Film Does At Least Take Place in the Same "Universe" as Cloverfield
When J.J. Abrams calls something a "blood relative" that can mean a lot of things. And although it's not totally clear if the events of this film happen before, during, or after the events of Cloverfield (although some sneaky sleuthing suggests it could be a few years after), the roar of the monster and Goodman's insistence on preparing and staying underground seem to confirm it is the same monster, or set of monsters, that tore through New York in the original. At the very least, there are definite parallels between the stories, which is more than we knew when the first trailer dropped.
10 Cloverfield Lane will be released in theaters March 11.
