A few months back, Universal Pictures announced they'd be creating a new movie universe, kind of like Marvel's Avengers, revolving around their very large library of classic monsters. This announcement followed news that Tom Cruise would be leading the cast of a modern-day take on The Mummy -- and now, it seems like Johnny Depp could join playing The Invisible Man!

Deadline reports that Depp has already been cast in the new reboot, as the studio tries to reestablish their classic monsters into pop culture. So far, little is known about the Invisible Man film other thanthat  it will be set in the same universe as the upcoming Mummy one.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, so far there's no news on who will be directing The Invisible Man nor even who's writing the script. Though it seems Universal has been hiring some of the biggest scribes in the business to tackle this new massive project. Current rumors claim that Ed Solomon, who wrote the screenplay for Men in Black, is attached to give life to the H.G. Wells' classic.

The first time Universal adapted Wells' novel was in 1933, in a now-classic film starring Claude Rains and endlessly referenced ever since, including a mention in a song from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The story revolves around a scientist who develops a way to become invisible, but the drug that makes him disappear has side effects on his brain, making him jealous and psychotic.

For Depp, it should be something rather like Secret Window.

With Depp and Cruise playing roles in the upcoming franchise, Universal has hired two of the biggest stars in the world to headline their monster films. While Depp will apparently be playing the Invisible Man, in his own film, Cruise will play a heroic lead against a lady mummy, which will be played by Sofia Boutella, from Kingsman: The Secret Service.
