This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first time that Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock led the way of the Starship Enterprise in the original Star Trek series. Nearly a year after the first Spock, Leonard Nimoy, died, his co-star and longtime friend, William Shatner, has released a memoir about the multi-talented actor -- and it turns out they were fighting before his death.

According to The Washington Post, Shatner recently released Leonard: The Fifty-Year Friendship with A Remarkable Man, a memoir about his relationship with his co-star and friend of many years, where he made a shocking revelation: at the time of Nimoy's death, the two hadn't spoken in years.

For reasons unknown to the Boston Legal actor, Nimoy cut contact with him years back.

"I don't know why he stopped talking to me," Shatner told The Hollywood Reporter recently, speaking about the time he and Nimoy stopped being friends and the reason behind their separation. "I don't know. I thought he was joking at first and treated it as a joke [...] But that time he really meant, no. ... I just don't know, and it is sad and it is permanent. I don't know why he stopped talking to me."

The spat could be the real reason behind Shatner's seemingly cold response to Nimoy's death last year, when he famously didn't show up at the actor's funeral due to a previous engagement. Still, Shatner does remain in contact with Nimoy's family.

In any case, in his new book, Shatner also expands on how close he and Nimoy were for many years, and they got especially close in the late '90s after Shatner's third wife, Nerine Kidd, drowned in the couple's pool. Nimoy mourned along with Shatner and their relationship solidified, particularly as Mr. Spock had helped Kidd through her time coping with alcoholism, and after her death, really helped Shatner in getting back on his feet.

Shatner's homage to his gone friend will be on bookstores starting February 16.
