Prepare yourselves, "Fifty Shades of Grey" fans... "Les Miserables" star Eddie Redmayne and English starlet Sheridan Smith have officially been cast as the kinky Christian Grey and Anastasia Steel in the highly-anticipated film adaptation of E.L. James' hit erotica novel! JUST KIDDING! The 31-year-old "Best Actress in a Musical" starlet sent out a tweet on Monday, April 1, insisting that she "couldn't wait to start filming" for the hot-and-steamy trilogy. The post soon went viral... until Smith admitted that it was all just an April Fools' day prank! So take a deep breath, "Fifty Shades" diehards, Redmayne and Smith ARE NOT starring as Mr. Grey and Miss Steele (well, not yet, anyway).
Smith, who stars as Elle Woods in the Broadway rendition of "Legally Blonde," tweeted this shocking "Fifty Shades" announcement on April Fools Day:
@Sheridansmith1: "I'm so excited to tell you that I've been cast as the lead girl in 50 shades of grey opposite Eddie Redmayne, can't wait to start filming!!"
The tweet soon went viral, with several fans calling Smith out on her little prank...
@rorhor: "hahahahahaaaaa nice one."
@BigTomD: "April Fools Shez?"
@NotFredRhodes: "just in time! 11:59!"
Still, some fans actually fell for it:
@catterallwhite: "never had any interest in that book but now the film will be a must see!"
@fountain1987: "that's amazing! Congratulations! X."
@clarateddy: "ohh Eddie Redmayne would be perfect as Christian Grey."
Smith went on to clarify that the "Fifty Shades" official casting news was indeed just a prank:
@Sheridansmith1: "In my dreams! Haha, I just got that in a minute before midday. Happy April fools twits ;) Xxxxxxxx."
@Sheridansmith1: "I'm crying laughing that some of u actually fell for that! Especially amused by @fountain1987 @louiespence & @Ecclestonshire :D love ya's!!!"
The "Mrs. Briggs" starlet even gave a shout-out to one fan who insisted that Smith would make a great Ana Steele:
@Sheridansmith1: "'@RachelMayne35: she was 21 not 19, you could easily pass for that! X.' Rachel I could kiss you but you should've gone to specsavers ;) Xx."
Still, the fact that Smith and Redmayne weren't officially cast as Grey and Steele comes to the relief of many. They just don't have the look or chemistry, although 31-year-old Redmayne has managed to stir some "Fifty Shades" buzz...
50 Shades of Grey Movie Casting News UPDATE, Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele: 'Les Mis' Sweethearts Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried the Perfect Match? [POLL]
As Mstarz originally reported:
Redmayne's rather boyish looks might not coincide with the mysterious, dominant, tall dark and handsome description of Grey... but Redmayne is an up-and-coming actor who seems to have a lot going for him. Not only are critics already insisting "Les Miserables" has major Academy Award potential, but Redmayne's portrayal of the aspiring filmmaker Colin Clark in the 2011 drama "My Week with Marilyn" had many viewers buzzing. Redmayne has also achieved a number of awards for his acting work, including the 2010 Tony Award for 'Best Featured Actor in a Play' for his performance in the West End and Broadway production of the hit drama play "Red." Taking on the racy role of Grey in "Fifty Shades of Grey" may just be that final boost that Redmayne needs to really launch his career - and producers may like the fact that he's still somewhat in the shadows of Hollywood (therefore not associated with any specific film or television genre). Not to mention Redmayne's a Brit, which might appeal to E.L. James herself!
Do some readers still think Redmayne could make the perfect Christian Grey?
