In a bit of news that is sure to make Whovians worldwide squeal, Matt Smith and David Tennant were recently spotted at a read-through of the script for the upcoming 50th Anniversary special of Doctor Who. The 10th and 11th Doctor were seen with newest companion Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman) and actress Joanna Page, whose role in the special has yet to be identified. The number of cast members continues to swell as the 9th Doctor (Chris Eccleston), companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) and longtime fan favorite villains the Zygons, are all slated to appear in the half-centennial episode. (Check out the cast photos here).
While it has been three years since David Tenant left the series and 10 since Chris Eccleston departed, the shape-shifting Zygons have been through a much larger hiatus from the iconic franchise. They last appeared on the show in the 4th Doctor adventure, "Terror of the Zygons" over 30 years ago.
The Zygons have remained a fan-favorite adversary and have been mentioned in passing several times since their famous episode. They were among the massed aliens at the Stonehenge seen of 2010's The Pandorica Opens" and were talked up in "The Power of Three" episode. However, the upcoming special is their first proper appearance since 1975.
The 50th Anniversary celebration will contain a massive convention and party at London's ExCel Centre on November 22 expected to draw in 15,000 Whovians. The fete will lead up to the premiere of the 50th Anniversary Special the following day (November 23). On top of appearances by many (if not all) of the the Doctors, the cast also includes screen legend John Hurt and many memorable villains.
Are you excited for the upcoming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special? Will you be attending the convention on November 22? Did you miss the Zygons? What about Chris Eccleston, Billie Piper and David Tennant (Who am I kidding? We all miss Tennant.)?
