Last Sunday, longtime Bafta host and British national treasure Stephen Fry got caught up in a twit-storm of criticism after calling Mad Max: Fury Road costume designer Jenny Beavan a "bag lady" after she won an award at the ceremony Feb. 14.
Despite Fry's insistence that Beaven is a friend and the remark was a joke, the response prompted the comedian to disable his Twitter account; now, it seems Fry and husband Elliott Spencer may be leaving the U.K. for Hollywood!
Speaking to U.K.'s The Sun, Spencer said he and husband Fry were in talks to buy a home in California, a move that was obviously planned way ahead of last Sunday's controversy.
"We're moving to Los Angeles and I'm applying for a green card. We're excited about having a new base," Spencer told the outlet.
Back in October, Fry stepped down as host of popular quiz show QI after a 13-year tenure, and in January he also quit his job as director of the Premier League Norwich.
Clearly, 28-year-old Spencer and 58-year-old Fry, who married in early 2015, are looking to start their new life together in new environs. This would be a huge change for Fry, who for decades has had a thriving career in his native England, from his double act with Hugh Laurie all the way to more recent projects like voicing Colonel K in Danger Mouse.
Earlier this week, Fry took to his website to blog about why he left Twitter following a spat with followers over a joke he made on Bafta night, explaining that, for him, "the fun is over" in the social network because, basically, people have become much too sensitive, revealing that he was "free, free at last."
