People simply could not stop talking about Daisy Ridley's performance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, where the character Rey proved that a woman can be so much more than just a damsel in distress. However, Episode VII also featured another strong female character in Gwendoline Christie's Captain Phasma, who never once removed her helmet. But why was it important for the chrome-plated Stormtrooper to keep her helmet on?
Christie recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly, where she confirmed that Phasma's hidden face actually helped in the development of the character.
"I thought it was a really interesting opportunity because as an actor I'm interested in transformation and different kinds of roles," Christie said. "What's the role about? Who is the character? What does the character mean in the function of a project or story? I thought it was a really interesting opportunity to play a female character where we formed an opinion of her based on her actions rather than the way she has been made flesh."
In addition to that, the Game of Thrones actress admitted that she would've been happy to play any character as long as it was someone who is in The Force Awakens. However, playing a-character-like Phasma made being part of the film all the more exciting.
"I made no secret of the fact I wanted to be in the film," Christie said. "I campaigned hard to be in the film, but to be in it as that kind of character - she's a woman, she's in armor, the armor isn't sexualized, and in the film we don't see the actor's face - I thought that was an exciting, modern concept."

Phasma may have been the butt of a joke between Finn (John Boyega) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford), but that doesn't mean we have seen the last of her. Christie happily confirmed that she will be returning in Star Wars Episode VIII.
"Obviously, I'm delighted to be in another film," she said.
Christie will return as Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones Season 6, which will air on HBO on April 24.
