Earlier this week, allegations against Lamar Odom's cancer research funding charity "Cathy's Kids" claimed that instead of its intended purposes, the money has been given to two elite youth basketball teams. Now, Odom's wife, reality television star Khloe Kardashian, has decided to defend her man and his charity, saying Lamar has never spent a dime of the "Cathy's Kids" funds for personal use or gain.
On her Celebuzz blog, Khloe addressed the accusations:
"It is unfortunate that my husband has been the target of an attack on athletes' charities, although he has personally contributed approximately $2.2 million to his foundation, Cathy's Kids, to fulfill its charitable purposes that include helping underprivileged inner-city youth.
"The millions of dollars personally contributed by Lamar constituted more than 90% of the money raised by the foundation. All of the funds donated by Lamar and the other contributions to Cathy's Kids were used for one of the foundation's intended charitable purposes. Not one penny went to help Lamar personally or any member of his family. No charitable funds were misused, and the IRS has repeatedly given Cathy's Kids a clean bill of health, confirming that there were no improprieties."
Mstarz recently reported on the criticism of "Cathy's Kids." Here is an excerpt:
According to an investigation by ESPN, no funds have gone towards cancer research but instead have focused on two elite you basketball teams. The sports network reported, "Of the $2.2 million raised by the charity, at least 60 percent -- $1.3 million -- went to those AAU teams."
Also, a chunk of the funds raised the charity apparently went into the bank account of its secretary, longtime friend and best man to Odom at his 2009 wedding to Khloe, Jerry DeGregorio. Once the high school basketball coach to Odom and now an assistant coach with the NBA's Golden State Warriors, DeGregorio was reported to have earned an annual salary of $72,000 from 2004 to 2011 from the charity. The only problem with that is the fact that "Cathy's Kids" was operating at a loss at that time. According to reports, 2011's tax return for the charity showed a debt of $256,000.
