According to ABC 11, 24-year-old Akiel Denkins was shot after being wanted by authorities for a warrant. Raleigh Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown said that a gun was found "in close proximity to" the dead man, whose name has not been officially released.
A woman reported to be Denkins' mother said that her son was running from the police and was shot because they couldn't chase him down.

"He was running away," Rolanda Byrd claimed. "They couldn't catch him so they shot at him seven times." Byrd continued, "Whoever is back there is dead, they (police) told me whoever is back there is dead." "Everybody seen it," the mother said. "They ain't going down with this one. They ain't gonna get away with this one, there's at least 40 eyewitnesses out here." Byrd said there were a number of witnesses that show her son get shot by a white officer. As the news started to spread around the Raleigh community, a small group of protesters started to arrive at the shooting area yelling: "Black lives matter." Twitter and other social media accounts are starting to become more active. Within the last hour, outraged protesters have started to go to Bragg Street and S. East Street near the PJ's Grill and Groceries building.

The News Observer adds that Denkins was the father of two sons. He also just celebrate his birthday on February 8. Sean Dailey, Akiel Denkins’ father, revealed that he'd now have to tell Denkins' younger silbings what happened to their brother.
“I got kids at home who I got to tell what happened to their big brother,” the upset father said.
Court documents showed that Denkins was arrested back in October and charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute it. Denkins was charged with failing to show up to court on that case back on Feb. 2.
