Tina Fey, the genius who gave us pop culture jewels like 30 Rock and the Netflix sitcom Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, has just given the world some great news: her most famous film, Mean Girls, is being turned into a musical!
Queen Bee Regina George will be back to terrorize high school while singing and dancing, a full 12 years after Rachel McAdams first played her on screen.
As part of her promotional tour for war movie Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Fey visited Watch What Happens Live last Tuesday, and host Andy Cohen asked her a round of questions about the rumored musical project. Confirming she and her composer husband Jeff Richmond are working on a Mean Girls musical, the actress and producer responded a few burning questions regarding the project.
So far, we know Fey and Richmond are working on the show, which will have a classic Broadway vibe instead of a more pop-like Bring It On: The Musical. It's also clear Fey won't be taking on her own role either, as she's preparing to hire a "professional Broadway person," and the 11 o'clock number is still up to anyone's guess at this point, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Don't hold your breath for a premiere date, though; the Saturday Night Live alum joked that the musical would be premiering around 2027 or "whenever Hamilton closes," which certainly doesn't sound very hopeful. And don't expect to see the likes of Lindsay Lohan and McAdams back, either, as Fey will be focusing her casting choices on more tried-and-true musical theater performers.
Since Mean Girls first reached theaters in 2004, some of the film's stars have gone on to be among the top talents in Hollywood. McAdams recently snagged an Oscar nomination for her role in Best Picture winner Spotlight, Lizzy Caplan is an Emmy nominee with her ongoing period drama Masters of Sex and Amanda Seyfried has starred in her fair share of buzzed movies like Les Miserables.
Let's just hope Fey and Richmond finish writing the Mean Girls musical much sooner than 2027, and see if the lyrics are as catchy as the movie is quotable.
