In The Place Beyond the Pines, the new film starring Ryan Gosling as a down-on-his-luck travelling performer who turns to crime to support his baby, a bank robbery scene was shot using real customers as extras. The film, which is currently in theaters, is directed by famed documentarian and director Derek Cianfrance who is known for his off-script and "in the moment" directing. Earlier this month, he released the opening, continuous shot opening scene featuring Ryan Gosling walking through a crowded fair in order to get the his performance. So the film is full of real people in order to make it feel more real, too. The film also stars Eva Mendes and Bradley Cooper.
Here is the opening clips of The Place Beyond the Pines described above:
"I've been thinking about a bank robbery my whole life," the 30-year-old Hollywood heartthrob said in an interview with the Daily Telegraph, adding, "and I finally got to do it."
Just like the opening clip (above), the bank robbery scene was also one shot and involved real customers that happened to be in the bank. Luckily everyone was aware of the delicate scene that was about to be shot, so no confusion came about and nobody got hurt or in trouble.
"I'm there with the gun and I look down and people are just smiling. They were just enjoying the show and I think I spotted someone filming me on their camera phone as I robbed the place," Gosling said.
Reflecting on the film as a whole, Ryan said, "I loved making this movie. Initially, I just thought I got to rob banks on a bike, but actually it goes much, much deeper than that."
