Quarterback Tim Tebow has been a member of the New York Jets for about a year now and despite rumors of his tenure with the team coming to an end soon, it looks like Tebow isn't taking the hint. Tebow is under contract for two more years so it isn't completely shocking that he is expected to show up for the Jets voluntary off-season program on Monday. However, many people are surprised Tebow hasn't been traded or cut yet this off-season after a tumultuous first season, which consisted of media distractions and little on field performance.
After the Jets acquired Tebow last off-season a media circus quickly followed him to Jets camp. From the start of the off-season conditioning programs all the way until the end of the season the media focused on Tebow. Many believe Tebow's presence on the team as a backup quarterback and special teams blocker caused a distraction. The Jets ended the season 6-10 and general manager Mike Tannenbaum was soon fired.
It was widely assumed as a part of the teams off-season changes, Tebow would be released or traded. The Jets are stuck with Mark Sanchez and his bloated salary and they signed veteran David Garrard to compete for the starting quarterback spot. The Jets clearly weren't impressed with Tebow last season as he was seldom used in the offensive game plan. Tebow threw just eight passes all season in 2012. The Jets have a new offensive coordinator, Marty Mornhinweg, but Tebow isn't expected to be a major part of the upcoming team's plans.
According to the New York Daily News, Tebow is expected to report to the Jets voluntary workouts this Monday. With the news that Tebow will be participating in the Jets voluntary off-season workouts it will be interesting to see if the team responds by releasing him sooner rather than later. It's possible the Jets thought Tebow would skip the voluntary workouts since it's widely assumed he won't be with the team at the start of the season. Now that Tebow is planning on showing up, the media circus may begin all over again. This is something many would think the team would want to avoid. Could this be the case of one side trying to call the other side's bluff?
If Tebow is traded, there are a few teams who could use Tebow's services. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars come to mind being in Florida where Tebow went to college. Tebow is still immensely popular in that area and he could serve as the backup quarterback. The Seattle Seahawks also could use a backup quarterback after trading Matt Flynn to the Oakland Raiders.
Where do you think Tebow will end up playing come week one of the NFL season?
