Back in 2007, an outrageous high school comedy called Superbad came out in theaters and introduced two actors that would end up becoming superstars in the coming years: Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. In the near-decade since then, the two have turned into Oscar nominees and extremely successful performers -- and now, they're set to reunite for Manic, a new comedy series by Cary Fukunaga!
According to Deadline, both actors are currently in final talks to join Fukunaga's latest venture, a half-hour dark comedy that will apparently be looking for a straight-to-series deal for a two-season order, with Fukunaga directing every episode. So far there's no writer contracted, however.
The series will be an American remake of the 2014 Norwegian series of the same name, following a guy who lives a fantasy life when in fact he's a patient at a psychiatric institution; both Hill and Stone will be playing patients there.
Think of a mix of Choke and the Robert Downey Jr. film, The Singing Detective and you'll get an idea of what you're looking at.
Fukunaga has had few big projects, but so far they've been very successful. He's the creator of HBO critical smash True Detective, besides writing and directing last year's award-winning film Beasts of No Nation, which was distributed by Netflix. Because of his past involvement with both production companies (HBO and Netflix), it seems likely that he'll be trying to sell his new comedy to either one of them.
As Variety reports, this will be the first time either Hill or Stone has landed regular series roles. The two will also be producing the upcoming series, something neither has done in the past.
In the years since Superbad, Stone has been part of a major superhero franchise (The Amazing Spider-Man movies), been part of a Best Picture Oscar winner (Birdman, for which she was also nominated) and become a Woody Allen muse, starring in two of his most recent films.
Hill, on the other hand, has gained two Oscar nods (including for his role in the Martin Scorsese dark comedy The Wolf of Wall Street) and focused much of his career on comedies.
