On its for the official release date, available now for the PS4 and PS3, the Major League Baseball video game, MLB The Show 16, features the top players and popular teams. In the latest gameplay footage, check out Toronto Blue Jays Pitcher Pat Venditte as he uses both arms to pitch the perfect game.
Pat Venditte taught himself how to use both arms to pitch since his early childhood. To demonstrate his ambidextrous skills, Venditte regularly used both when he was a starter back in college. As a major accompishment, Venditte was able to put together a scoreless streak of 43 2/3 innings. After being drafted, the organization for professional baseball umpires developed a rule to govern the switch pitchers as to how they could use their arms during a game.
Fox Sports explains the official rule from the Professional Baseball Umpire Corporation, "The pitcher must visually indicate to the umpire, batter and runner(s) which way he will begin pitching to the batter. Engaging the rubber with the glove on a particular hand is considered a definitive commitment to which arm he will throw with. The batter will then choose which side of the plate he will bat from."
In an interview with Polygon, Ramone Russell of Sony's San Diego Studio describes the challenges the amount of work behind capturing Venditte using either hand. One designer had worked with the programmers over the course of about two months to get this feature into the game itself, "It was definitely not easy. When this happened with him last year, we all said, 'Hey, this is really cool, so lets see how hard it is to implement.'"
Because the pitcher can throw with both arms and change during mid-game Rusell adds, "We did all this for one guy who isn't even on a major league roster come opening day,"
MLB The Show 16 is out in stores now, available for the PlayStation 4 and PS3.
