WGN America continues with the highly anticipated premiere of their new original drama, Underground. In Episode 4, Firefly , Noah (Aldis Hodge) and Rosalee (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) continue to plan their daring 600-mile escape from their Georgia plantation.
While Noah and Rosalee are on the run from the dogs, Cato (Alano Miller) discovers her rapist lying on the floor, with his neck bleeding. Just as Cato is about to kill the rapist with his bare hands, he stops himself when help arrives. The rapist calls out Rosalee's name, pointing the blame on her.
Back at the plantation, Tom Macon (Reed Diamond) realizes he should have trusted Cato more. As they drink together, Tom explains to Cato that pure rum is highly flammable. Back at the cotton field, Cato is harsher towards the slaves and yelled at Zeke (Theodus Crane) for mentioning his canteen is leaking.
Knowing his slaves are on the run, Tom Macon hires the hunter August Pullman (Christopher Meloni) and his boy to find them. Knowing how Noah and Rosalee escaped from the plantation is just half of August's job. Hiding out in the woods, Noah realizes he cannot abandon the others and has to go back to the plantation for them.
Elsewhere, John Hawkes (Marc Blucas) and his wife Elizabeth (Jessica De Gouw) find themselves taken hostage by Josey (Jussie Smollett). Josey thinks John knows exactly where his wife was sold to. Because Josey is willing to kill for any kind of information, his buddy abandons the couple.
After forcing Elizabeth to whip her own husband, John tells Josey what he remembers from the past. Josey wants to believe so much of John' story, but everything was a lie. Josey is about to kill John when his friend shows up and beats him down.A fter apologizing to Elizabeth for running away, Josey's friend is then shot in the head by a police officer.
The police are investigating the shooting at John and Elizabeth's place. The couple mislead the police, telling them it was a robbery gone wrong. Elizabeth realizes why John told the lie; he was punishing himself for his past crime.
During the night, Cato starts yelling at slaves, including Moses (Mykelti Williamson) and Zeke, before striking back at the slave owners. Planned since the beginning, Cato torches the entire cotton field. The leak from Cato's canteen was actually rum from Tom Macon's cellar.
Moses grabs hold of his child as his wife stays behind. Moses' wife slows down August as she pleads with him not to kill her in front of her child. August hesitates shooting her, but instead holds her prisoner.
As Rosalee watches the fireflies swarm in the air, Noah whistles for her to come out. Roaslee realizes Noah has rounded up the runaway slaves from the plantation, but where is her brother?
With the cotton field up in flames, Tom Macon glances at Ernestine, who's afraid to look him in the eye.
