Following their lineup of live broadcasts of beloved musicals (after The Sound of Music and Peter Pan), NBC is upping the ante by bringing Aaron Sorkin's first screenplay, A Few Good Men, to the small screen. Based on a play written by Sorkin, the 1992 court drama starred Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sorkin will be writing the teleplay adaptation of his own play (as it will be based on the play instead of the more popular movie). Sorkin soon adapted his work for another medium, as he was the one who wrote the screenplay to the 1992 film.
Aside from writing, he'll be joining in as executive producer, accompanied by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, the producing duo behind Chicago and Hairspray, as well as the team behind NBC's growing Live! franchise.
As Variety reports, this is a risky move for NBC: while the Live! franchise has been successful so far, it's partly because the plays have all been fairly light-hearted musicals. This will be the first time they attempt to bring a drama to the format, so it's no surprise a familiar play/film was brought for this attempt.
In past iterations of the format, the network has brought in some big names to give its projects more gravitas, so it wouldn't be surprising if they did the same with their dramatic turn.
The live version of A Few Good Men will air at some point of 2017.
The project will mark Sorkin's grand return to broadcast television, a medium he's been absent from since his previous partnership with NBC, the network where he created The West Wing and the underrated and short-lived Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.
Since stepping down from NBC, Sorkin has found success with HBO with The Newsroom and the big screen, winning an Oscar for the Mark Zuckerberg biopic The Social Network.
