The Walking Dead has been known for its infuriating cliffhangers for a while now, but fans were certainly not expecting the most jaw-dropping ending in last night's season finale. Although viewers were rewarded with a tense look at Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan, "Last Day on Earth" ended without revealing who the villain killed. Now TWD executive producer Robert Kirkman has spoken up about the cliffhanger, stating that the point of the episode was to change Rick's "mindset!"
The TWD comic book creator was one of the guests on Talking Dead (via ComicBook.com), where he addressed fans' complaint about the cliffhanger.
"First of all, as a fan, I love cliffhangers. I love that tension," Kirkman admitted. "I love the anticipation of finding out what it is."
The writer also shared that his comic book series usually concludes in a similar fashion as the season finale.
"If you read the comic book series, I think pretty much every issue ends with a big cliffhanger," he said. "And I think that's a lot of fun."
(This certainly didn't look "fun" for the character, though).
Kirkman continued to explain that viewers should look beyond the unexpected ending to fully understand what is going on with the show.
"This story, the cliffhanger isn't the story," he said, adding that showrunner Scott Gimple and the show's writers made sure that the focus was on Andrew Lincoln's character.
"The story of the episode, and Scott and Matt Negrete did such a great job of setting up how confident Rick was going into this," Kirkman said before stating that "Last Day on Earth" takes that away from the character.
"This episode is about the loss of that confidence. It's about changing that mindset," he said. "It's about tearing Rick Grimes down and that's the conclusion of this story."
In addition to that, Kirkman also confirmed that the show will continue with the revelation of Negan's victim and how the group deals with the death.
"While it does seem like a cliffhanger, that's the conclusion," he said. "And the story of who died, the story of what comes next, of who Negan killed, of what comes after that, that's really the story of Season 7."
