One of the most epic iconic Batman one-shot graphic novels of all time, Alan Moore's The Killing Joke, is finally getting adapted nearly 30 years after its 1988 release. For the major 2016 release, voice actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are returning to the roles of the Caped Crusader and The Joker, respectively -- and here's a teaser!
According to The Verge, the teaser and a new behind-the-scenes The Killing Joke featurette recently appeared on YouTube on fairly odd channels (one is credited to Bruce Wayne and the other to The Batman) instead of DC Comics' official ones, but still, the content appears to be legit.
On the teaser, we see the first bits of struggle between The Joker and Batman, and the super villain looks even more psychotic than usual, as any Moore fan would have it on this particular comic book adaptation. The featurette, on the other hand, sees the cast and crew discussing why the Killing Joke comic has endured as a piece to be reckoned with since 1988, besides talking about the new animation for the film.
As io9 Gizmodo reports, there have been a few changes to Moore's original story for the cinematic version, such as expanding the role of Barbara Gordon, which is very minor (and tragic) in the comic.
The Killing Joke, a story told in two different timelines, offers a new perspective on Gotham's most feared clown: an origin story of a failed stand-up comedian and family man who becomes the psychotic killer after having one bad day. In the present-day side of the story, The Joker torments Jim Gordon -- and leaves his daughter, Batgirl Barbara Gordon, paralyzed in the process.
As shown in the teaser, in the upcoming film audiences will get to see more of Batgirl before the tragic events that ultimately turned the character into Oracle.
Batman: The Killing Joke will be released some time this summer, and it will also feature the voice talents of Tara Strong as Barbara Gordon and Ray Wise as Commissioner Jim Gordon.
