'Mad Max: Fury Road' Stars Tom Hardy & Charlize Theron Hated Each Other On George Miller Set

Last year's Mad Max: Fury Road, George Miller's reboot of his own dystopian story, was a smash with critics and brought back fairly good box office, partially because of its two strong leads, Tom Hardy in the title role Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa. Perhaps they worked so well together because they couldn't stand each other.

The Oscar-winning actress recently sat down with WSJ Magazine, as she's  promoting her summer release The Huntsman: Winter's War, and talked about her time filming Mad Max. 

"From what I hear, he's not like that on every movie -- I hear he's had good experiences," said Theron when speaking of the English actor. "Maybe the movie is what it is because we struggled so much with each other, and those characters had to struggle so much with each other. If we were chum-chum, maybe the movie would have been 10 times worse."

Although the actress didn't go into specifics, it's clear things got fairly awkward during shooting. Even director Miller noted it, saying the animosity of the two characters could be seen in the actors' relationship off the screen. The actor was asked to comment on the supposed feud between them for the WSJ article, but refused to do so.

Either way, it worked: Steering away from any sort of romantic relationship between them, both characters are easily among the most interesting from 2015 films.

As Yahoo! reports, though, news of Theron and Hardy not getting along does come as a bit of a shock, as there didn't seem to be any animosity during press events for the film. Over the past year, Hardy faced questions about his sexuality in a number of events (for this film and others), so he may have had his hands full with other things with the press to worry about than an uncomfortable experience on a set.

The next film from the recently rebooted franchise, Mad Max: The Wasteland, will begin production shortly, and Theron won't be reprising her role.
