No, Tom Cruise has NOT been involved in a fatal car crash despite some reports circulating around the Internet saying that the 50-year-old Hollywood superstar was killed on Thursday. Cruise can now be added to the long list of victims of the celebrity death hoax. Australian TV station 9 News first pronounced that the actor had died in a Queensland, Australia, car accident. Fortunately, the Oblivion star is very much alive and well, so the station removed its report. Unfortunately, other news outlets reported on their report and the hoax continued.

Here is a screencap of the original report thanks to MSN News.

The original article on 9 News claimed that the Tom Cruise accident occurred while the star was on vacation in Australia. This report also claimed that the 50-year-old actor died at approximately 5:30AM on Thursday morning. But Tom was very much alive at the Los Angeles premiere of his new movie Oblivion just 12 hours later. This made it clear that the original report was a hoax.

Even stranger is that the Royal Queensland Police allegedly provided confirmation of identifying the dead body with a photo ID found at the scene of the crash.

This news definitely turned some heads, but it looks like 9 News knew exactly what it was doing the whole time. At the bottom of the report, a statement read:

"FAKE... THIS STORY IS 100% FAKE! this is an entertainment website, and this is a totally fake article based on zero truth and is a complete work of fiction for entertainment purposes!"

So, good one, I guess?

This is not the first time Tom Cruise has been pronounced dead on the Internet. In 2010, the actor "died" at least three times, all of which were in New Zealand. One was attributed to a car crash, another had him falling off a cliff and the third had him meeting his demise in a plumbing accident.
