As the Marvel Cinematic Universe keeps expanding, plans for the biggest event in Phase 3, Avengers: Infinity War, are currently in the works -- and it's going to be big all right! The Captain America: Civil War directors, Russo brothers Joe and Anthony, recently confirmed something everyone had assumed: the Guardians of the Galaxy will join the fight against Thanos!

Currently promoting their second outing behind the camera in the MCU, the Russo brothers recently sat down with Comic Book to talk about the franchise's future, and fans can get excited with the news! Though the entire band of misfits from Guardians of the Galaxy haven't been confirmed just yet, we can rest assured that the cassette-listening leader will definitely be around.

"The movies are intended to be a culmination of everything that's happened before in the MCU so you don't want to get into spoilers but I'm a big fan of what James Gunn has done," said Anthony Russo. "We are both big fans of what James Gunn has done. Star-Lord is a fantastic character and Chris Pratt is an awesome performer so you'd be very excited."

In other words, Star-Lord will definitely battle Thanos one more time -- and it seems likely that at least Thanos' adoptive daughter Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and the revenge-thirsty Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) could be joining him when fighting off the Marvel mega-villain, played by Josh Brolin.

Ever since Thanos first appeared in the post-credits scene from Joss Whedon's 2012 Avengers, the MCU has been teasing the return of the villain in bits and pieces, most notoriously on the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, where he was the man behind Lee Pace's Ronan the Accuser. Thanos also appeared in a mid-credits scene on last year's Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Avengers: Infinity War will be split into two films, the first of which comes out on May 4, 2018 and is followed by its sequel a year later, on May 3, 2019.
