'Captain America: Civil War' Star Chris Evans Turned Down Steve Rogers Role: "I was Scared!"

It's hard to imagine the kind-hearted do-gooder Steve Rogers being played by anybody else other than Chris Evans, but the Captain America: Civil War star has just admitted that he initially turned down the role of a lifetime! But why would Evans say no to such a juicy Marvel part?

Evans was recently a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he confessed to being "scared" of playing Captain America.

"Yeah yeah, I was scared," Evans admitted before explaining why he wanted to turn down a multiple film commitment.

"At first it was a matter, at first it was some nine picture contract, and there are parts of me that have a little bit of social anxiety with this industry and doing movies one at a time, if all the sudden you decide you don't want to do them anymore, you're afforded the opportunity to take a step back and recalibrate," he stated, adding that this was not possible with the Marvel deal.

"When you have a giant contract, if all the sudden you're not responding well, too bad," Evans said. "You've got to suit up again, and that was scary."

The actor/director also revealed that Marvel didn't give up that easily, so he sought out the advice of those who were closest to him.

"I said no a few times, and it kept coming back, and I talked to a few people in my life, family, and friends," Evans shared, adding that he began to realize that he was turning down the opportunity because he was afraid of failure.

"It just started to kind of make sense that I was saying no out of fear, really, and you can't do anything out of fear," he said.

Evans continued by stating that he decided to conquer his "fear" of failure and accept the role of the iconic Marvel superhero.

"You can't be doing something because you're scared, so it ended up kind of clicking to me in the way of looking at it and saying whatever you're scared of, push yourself into it," he concluded.

Evans went on to play Steve in four Marvel flicks including Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He will reprise the role in Civil War as well as the two Infinity War movies.

Captain America: Civil War will premiere on May 6.
