Over the past few years, Disney has been going through its vast library of animated classics to recreate past successes on live-action versions, retelling some of their most beloved properties in the big screen -- and Peter Pan might be next. In the latest rumors from the Disney front, it seems they might be taking the boy who refused to grow up to film again, in a film by David Lowery.
According to Deadline, Disney has already commissioned the new adaptation of J.M. Barrie's classic tale, with Lowery directing and co-writing the script with Toby Halbrooks, with whom he worked on another Disney remake, Pete's Dragon, set to premiere this fall.
So far, there's no cast attached for the project.
Disney tackled Peter Pan before in its 1953 animated classic, plus numerous made-for-television Tinkerbell spinoffs and reportedly an upcoming live-action film starring Reese Witherspoon as the famous fairy -- and this project could end up crossing over with Witherspoon's.
Outside of Disney, there have been several attempts at making Peter Pan work on the big screen, including Steven Spielberg's Hook and last year's critical flop Pan, directed by Joe Wright.
Disney has been tackling some of its most iconic properties in the last few years, creating live-action remakes with a twist, from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (which is getting a sequel this year) to the Angelina Jolie-led Maleficent, last year's Cinderella and 2017's Beauty and the Beast starring Harry Potter alum Emma Watson.
Variety reports there are also live-action versions of Dumbo and Winnie the Pooh in the works at Disney.
Disney's most recent remake, a Jon Favreau-directed live-action/CGI version of The Jungle Book, is coming to theaters this Friday, and with the film holding impressive critical acclaim ahead of its release (94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this article's publication), rumor has it Disney has already commissioned a sequel.
