Last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the seventh installment of the space saga created by George Lucas, raised even more questions than it answered regarding the fate and story behind its characters, particularly regarding who the parents Daisy Ridley's Rey are -- and J.J. Abrams, who directed the blockbuster, just made a comment that could shred every theory so far.
Abrams attended the New York-based Tribeca Film Festival last Friday night, as he was part of a discussion panel with Chris Rock, and they spoke about film, television and everything in between. Considering the Lost creator is one of the voices of the new Star Wars trilogy, obviously what happened a lot time ago in a galaxy far, far away came up -- and the filmmaker may have just confused everyone regarding the family of the Force Awakens heroine.
"Rey's parents are not in Episode VII. So I can't possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too," Abrams said cryptically, according to Collider.
There are a number of theories surrounding Rey's parentage, and the most popular ones involve members of the Skywalker family. Since the film landed on theaters last year, fans have greatly speculated that Rey could either be Leia and Han's daughter or Luke's, but all three of those characters appeared in Force Awakens and Rey met all of them, albeit briefly in Luke's case.
Another more recent theory claims she might be the daughter of Jyn Erso, a new character getting her own standalone prequel movie this year, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
After Abrams' words went viral as many were left clueless regarding Rey's identity, the filmmaker clarified his words to Entertainment Weekly, stating that his true meaning was that "she doesn't discover them in Episode VII," but that doesn't mean that "they may not already be in her world."
It seems we won't know anything for sure until we see Rey once again, when the character returns to the big screen on Rian Johnson's still-untitled Star Wars: Episode 8 on Dec. 15, 2017.
