Every year the Coachella Music Festival allows concertgoers to experience once-in-a-lifetime experiences, but this one might have been the most surprising. While watching Phoenix perform on the second day of the festival, fans expected the band to be joined by their friends and fellow French musical act, Daft Punk. The electronica act has already been stirring up excitement at the festival, so it would make sense for them to join Phoenix for a special performance. Unfortunately this did not happen. However, R. Kelly turned out to be the pop/rock band's special guest and the crowd was astonished.

When listening to Phoenix's hit song "1901" not a lot of people would guess that it could be mashed up with a smooth R&B track from the notorious singer R. Kelly. But that is exactly what happened the other night at Coachella, stunning the festival's attendees and resulting in one of the biggest mashups in the history of the event.

Here is a video of R. Kelly's performance with Phoenix:

It was clearly an interesting mix, but it definitely turned out to be a great performance.  What did you think of the mashup? Was it surprising? Did you enjoy the different takes on the songs?

Kelly was not the only R&B act to grace the festival with their sultry presence. Solange was a guest performer during the xx's set. Together they performed a special Coachella remix of Aaliyah's "Hot Like Fire" and Solange's "Locked in Closets," which lifted the atmosphere of an otherwise dreary, moody set.

Also, John Legend premiered his latest song during a DJ set. Produced by Benny Banassi, Legend's "Dance the Pain Away" had his listeners dancing in the desert.

There were plenty of great performances and definitely many more to come. What performances are you most looking forward to?
