Justin Bieber, Anne Frank Controversy: Internet Gets Riled Over 'Belieber' Guestbook Comments

Anyone who has made it through the American public school system is familiar with the story of Anne Frank, the Holocaust victim who shared her time hiding from the Nazis in The Diary of Anne Frank. Even Justin Bieber, who was schooled in Canada, knows of Frank as evidenced by a recent stop-off at the Anne Frank House, a museum in Amsterdam dedicated to the young girl. However, the comments that the Biebs left in the guestbook have sent the Internet at large into a tizzy.

According to the Museum's Facebook page, Bieber wrote "Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber."

Thousands of people have commented on the post and its supposed insensitivity. Many people have taken to Twitter to poke fun at Bieber's slip.

"Come on, Twitter, settle down about Justin Bieber. It's just a made-up controversy. We all know Justin Bieber can't read or write," tweeted Joe Garden.

""I've been thinking, and I now believe that people are really terrible and self-absorbed at heart." --Anne Frank," wrote Ken Jennings.

"Anne Frank's ghost haunts Justin Bieber, hovers high above his bed, leans down & whispers in his ear, 'I would've been a Juggalo,'" joked Jensen Karp.

Simon Pegg however, took the chance to come to the aid of Justin Bieber, claiming that it's the internet's obsession and intense scrutiny of the young star that is causing the controversy.

"What is wrong with Bieber?! When I was 19, absolutely everything I said was thoughtful considered and intelligent. Like all of us, right?" he tweeted.

The Anne Frank museum agrees. Spokeswoman Maatje Mostart said the following in an interview with the BBC:

"He's 19. It's a crazy life he's living, he didn't mean bad... and also it's nice that he made the effort, he didn't have to come."
