Daft Punk fans eagerly awaiting Random Access Memories (read: everyone) got a welcome surprise if they tuned in to Saturday Night Live this weekend. During the broadcast, a minute-long clip of upcoming single "Get Lucky" played to entice fans to pre-order the new album on iTunes.
The song features Pharell Williams on vocals and Nile Rodgers on guitar and the clip shows Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter in full-on Daft gear playing bass and drums. All four musicians are in glittery suits. The song itself seems to straddle the line between 70s disco/soul and 80s synth music. This isn't surprising as Daft Punk have expressed a desire to return to a full band sound.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, the EDM veterans claim that the genre that they call home has become complacent and cookie-cutter.
It's not moving one inch," Thomas Bangalter said. "That's not what artists are supposed to do."
"Today, electronic music is made in airports and hotel rooms, by DJs traveling," Bangalter added. "It has a sense of movement, maybe, but it's not the same vibe as going into these studios that contain specific things ... You hear a song - whose track is it? There's no signature."
That's when they came upon the idea of "[recreating] what we used to do with machines and samplers, but with people".
There are virtually no samples on Random Access Memories, with Daft Punk searching for a more organic dance music sound.
"[We tried] to make robotic voices sound the most human they've ever sounded, in terms of expressivity and emotion," said Bangalter.
Pharell recently spoke out how he got on the latest Daft Punk record in an interview with Rolling Stone.
"Whatever you do, call me - I'll play tambourine on it," he recalled telling them at a party for Madonna. "They looked at each other and they were like, We'll be in touch."
Random Access Memories drops May 21.
