Adam Sandler has a four-movie contract with Netflix and, months after releasing his first planned film, the critically panned but commercially successful Ridiculous Six, he's got a second one on the way, co-starring his fellow '90s Saturday Night Live alum David Spade, The Do-Over. The film's new trailer is here, and it actually looks pretty decent -- could this be Sandler's big comeback?
The main trailer for Sandler's second Netflix comedy is out, and it actually looks promising for a change. Starring Spade as a man whose life is pathetic on all fronts, the film will co-star Sandler as an old friend who comes back to his life and makes everything better -- or does he?
"David Spade plays Charlie [and Adam Sandler plays Max], old friends tired of their mundane lives who reunite at their 25th high school reunion for the ultimate mulligan: they decide to wipe the slate clean for a do-over," reads the film's synopsis, via IGN. "After faking their deaths and assuming new identities, could their lives be better the second time around?"
The film co-stars Paula Patton, Sean Astin (who was also on Sandler's 50 First Dates) and Luis Guzmán, who can be seen in the trailer in a very uncomfortable three-way with Spade.
Sandler hasn't stopped making movies in the past couple of decades, but perhaps he should have. While his earlier films like Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer were pretty great, it's been a very long time since Sandler released something that wasn't mostly cringe-worthy.
In fact, Sandler's two original films from last year (not counting his voice work in Hotel Transylvania 2) were so panned that Pixels holds a 17 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Ridiculous 6 has a dismal 0 percent.
The most recent Sandler-starring film that wasn't deemed "Rotten" by the critic aggregator site was 2009's Funny People, and to call that one a good movie might be something of a stretch.
Could this be the film that brings Sandler's '90s humor back? One can only hope!
The Do-Over will premiere on Netflix May 27.
