Based on the popular telenovela from Telemundo, USA network has set their premiere date for their version of La Reina Del Sur. Check out the photo of the upcoming pilot of Queen of the South, which features Alice Braga taking over the reins from Kate Del Castillo.
As we previously mentioned, based on the international hit by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, Queen Of The South tells the crime-ridden tale of Teresa Mendoza (Braga). Everything changes for Teresa when her drug-dealing boyfriend is unexpectedly murdered in Mexico. Forced to go on the run, Teresa seeks refuge in America.
Elsewhere in America, Mendoza will then team with an unlikely figure from her past. In her attempts to bring down the leader of the drug trafficking ring, she slowly learns the tools of the trade. How long before Teresa strategically positions herself to become the leader of the Cartel?
According to Entertainment Weekly, the USA crime drama will premiere in June. The ensemble cast includes Veronica Falcón, Justina Machado, Peter Gadiot, Hemky Madera, Gerardo Taracena, Joaquim de Almeida, and Jon Ecker. The USA show is executive produced by David T. Friendly.
In the poster, Teresa can be seen sitting in the throne as the tagline states, "All The Queenpin." The I Am Legend actress describes her role, "She's a very special character and is someone very strong in the sense of being a smart woman. She fights to survive."
The remake will not be word-for-word and the freshmen season will unfold across the US-Mexico border. We can only speculate that the adaptation of the novel will work better in the one-hour episode format.
Friendly compares this version, "Our show is not a telenovela. It's a one-hour American drama, with a slightly deeper exploration of character."
Queen of the South makes its USA Network debut on Tuesday, June 21 at 10pm.
