It's been 20 years since Will Smith shot the invading aliens right out of Earth on Roland Emmerich's Independence Day, and the world from the film has changed ever since -- but that doesn't mean things have gotten easier. In a new trailer for sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, a new generation of men and women, led by Liam Hemsworth, fight off those scary invaders from outer space once again!
Fox dropped the second trailer for the disaster film earlier this week, and it looks as promising and as filled with evil aliens as its 1996 predecessor. Although Smith won't be returning to his role of Capt. Steven Hiller due to scheduling conflicts (and probably salary ones as well), his son Dylan (Jessie Usher) will be around, and he's told his father was the bravest man he's ever seen.
The sequel brings back some of the cast members of the original film, including Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner. Additions aside from Hemsworth include Sela Ward and Charlotte Gainsbourg, aside from a myriad of younger, less known actors.
According to Slash Film, Resurgence was originally planned as a two-part movie that would be shot back to back, but the studio ultimately decided against the move. Still, if the film does well, it could mean there's a third part on the way.
Much like Star Wars, the new Independence Day movie is a tale of the new generation of the same families: from Hiller's son to the daughter of President Whitmore (Pullman), played by Maika Monroe (a role played by a very young Mae Whitman in the original movie), whose boyfriend is main character Hemsworth.
"Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force," reads the film's synopsis. "Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."
Independence Day: Resurgence will hit theaters on June 24.
