Country music legend Garth Brooks is facing a lawsuit from his former production partner Lisa Sanderson due to the singer "getting in the way" of lucrative deals. Sanderson also alleges that Brooks never made good on a 50/50 profit-sharing agreement. In court documents, Sanderson also claims that Brooks' public persona is a rouse and that he is in fact a "paranoid, angry, deceitful and vindictive man who will turn against those closest to him on a dime."
On Monday, a representative for Red Strokes, Brooks' production company, released the following statement:
"Mr. Brooks, of course, denies everything in the lawsuit filed today by Lisa Sanderson. Mr. Brooks and Red Strokes Entertainment Inc. will continue to take the necessary steps toward resolving this matter through the legal system."
Sanderson started working at Red Strokes in 1994 to help develop film and television projects for the country music singer. Apparently, Brooks' "unreasonable demands torpedoed nearly all of the potential deals that came their way," according to Sanderson's claims.
Ms. Sanderson also states that she "never received a dime of her fifty percent share of the producer fee" and proper compensation from the production company ceased in May of 2011. Brooks allegedly promised to pay her half of the profits for successful production deals and a $250,000 bonus for "loyalty and years of service."
In total, Sanderson is seeking $425,000 plus damages for breach of contract and fraud (among other claims).
So what were the opportunities that Brooks allegedly passed on? According to Sanderson's suit, we could have seen Garth acting in Twister and even Saving Private Ryan. Calling him an "egomaniac," Sanderson states that Brooks "wanted to be the star and was unwilling to share the limelight with ... Tom Hanks, Matt Damon and Edward Burns." Brooks, who is married to singer Trisha Yearwood, also allegedly had a development deal on his own project with FOX that eventually fell apart because he did not want to share his publishing with the company. The project was about a musician worth more dead than alive.
