After finding out that Steve Buscemi was a distant relative to bassist Chris Baio of Vampire Weekend, the band reached out to the famous actor to see if he would direct their upcoming "American Express Unstaged" concert on April 28 at the Roseland Ballroom. Buscemi accepted the gig and even visited the band during a rehearsal to meet and talk with them. What came out of this taped meeting is just plane hilarious and awkward.
The 55-year-old Buscemi is known more for his acting but he has directed a few projects over the years. Notable examples are episodes of "The Sapranos" and "30 Rock."
The first clip below is set up to show that the band was not aware of Buscemi's visit. Whether this was staged or not, it is still pulled off quite well. We learn about Steve's relationship to Baio and get to see how he interacts with one of the hottest indie rock bands today.
"I think what you guys do is really smart and it's very catchy, which I like, but I don't always understand the songs, to be honest," Buscemi tells the band in one of several awkward exchanges. "And I'm wondering, is this something that you talk about, like, 'Let's try and write a song that people can understand'?
Don't get me wrong," Buscemi says, adding, "sometimes I think I know what they mean or I'm listening to the lyrics and then you go, 'Peter Gabriel, too' or like 'Louis Vuitton' out of nowhere and I'm lost. Some of the references I don't get at all and I have to look it up. And I'm just wondering, if you think the songs were more accessible, you might have a bigger following?"
